What Is DTF Printing & Why Is It the Future of Custom Apparel?

DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing is a versatile transfer technology that delivers stunning, full-colour designs onto a wide range of fabrics. Unlike traditional sublimation, DTF transfers can be applied to polyester, poly-blend sportswear, cotton and cotton-blend garments — giving you far greater flexibility for both personalisation and commercial printing. The process involves printing your design onto a specialist transfer film, applying a layer of adhesive powder, and then transferring the finished design onto the garment using a standard heat press. The result is vibrant, durable and highly detailed prints without the need for weeding or the mess associated with traditional vinyl applications. Unlike sublimation printing, which works primarily with polyester and relies on the ink bonding directly with the fibres of the fabric, DTF creates a transfer that sits on the surface of the garment. This makes it suitable for both light and dark garments and a much broader range of materials.

What is DTF Sublimation printing and how does it work?

DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing is a method for printing designs onto fabric using a special transfer film. How it works: 🎨 The design is printed onto a clear film using specialized inks. 🧂 A layer of hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the printed design. 🔥 The powder is cured with heat. 👕 The film is placed onto the garment and heat-pressed. 📄 The film is peeled away, leaving the design permanently attached. Is there a minimum order quantity for DTF and Sublimation transfers?

No — there is absolutely no minimum order quantity. A single gang sheet or a full production roll can be ordered, and every order receives the same level of quality and care. How durable are DTF and Sublimation transfers after washing?

Sublimation transfers offer exceptional washability because the ink permanently dyes the polyester fibers rather than sitting on top as a surface layer. Properly applied Direct-to-Film (DTF) transfers last for 50 to 80+ wash cycles before showing significant fading or cracking. Wash no higher than 40c and do not tumble dry to prolong the life of your prints

What file formats are accepted for DTF and Sublimation printing?

PDF, PNG, and AI files are accepted for all DTF and Sublimation orders. For best results, submit artwork at 300 DPI with a transparent background and an embedded sRGB colour profile. When using the gang sheet builder, designs can be uploaded directly into the tool, arranged digitally, and the order placed — the builder handles the rest.
